 The Great Omar is a life size peacock.

Gorgeous japanes papers provide the intricate detail.

What I wouldn't give to be able to have one of these!

Lorenzo Duran

I just stumbled upon the work of Lorenzo Duran who creates complex, tiny cutouts on leaves.  His website is in Spanish, but the images really speak for themselves.

 The artist clearly is accomplished in the art of sacred geometry.

This piece is unique in his work in that it is based on random geometry.

This one is so gorgeously complex, he is obviously a master with the blade.

This one is reminiscent of a distant landscape in a Kurosawa film.

This reminds me of the traditional Islamic art of calligraphy on leaves.

These tiny works of art traditionally feature passages from the Qu'ran and are worked in gold leaf on dried leaves

More modern interpretations have introduced colour and illuminated decoration.

Spiral Galaxy

Somewhere in a galaxy not far from here.......

In this work galah feathers and tiny stitches recreate the mesmerising beauty of a spiral galaxy.

The centre of the galaxy is defined with a pink dyed area overlaid with running stitches.  Stem stitch delineates the "arms" of the galaxy with detail formed by tiny seed stitches, slightly longer random stitches, galah feathers and french knots.

The ground fabric is a very fine dupioni silk dyed with Landscapes dyes.  The threads, as always, hand dyed silk.

Fun with Inktense

I am having a bit of a hiatus in making embroidered works after the exhausting job of finishing 28 pieces for my exhibition.  So I've been having a bit of fun with my sketchbook (a very thoughtful gift from a friend) and my Derwent Inktense pencils.

I've always had a thing for bugs.  Found a photo of this colourful fellow in a book mysteriously titled, Bugs.  He is so resplendent I felt a bright tartan background was appropriate.

Today in a more sombre and reflective mood I decided I needed to draw something with a simple form in which I could explore colour and texture, hence this tulip that has been partially denuded of its petals.

I love the depth and intensity you can achieve with inktense pencils by layering and washing and layering over and over.

Fluid Thread

Another (as yet) untitled piece in my flow series.  This image represents a viscous fluid thread filament in a non-viscous fluid.

Stitches used:  satin stitch, stem stitch and french knots.
