If you have entered the URL that was linked on the previous post into your reader it will get a 404 message. The link below is now the correct (and final) URL for my new Blog.<br />
<br />
After 12 months on Blogger I am moving my blog to Weebly where I have my website. It is a move I have long been contemplating and my recent problems with uploading photos hardened my resolve and gave me the impetus to make the change.<br />
<br />
You can find my new blog - still called Silk and Colour at:<br />

My first post on the new site is waiting for you with many more to follow.Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-19048632035967260172012-07-31T18:06:00.000-07:002012-07-31T18:06:08.733-07:00Frustration, thy name is Google!I have been trying for 3 weeks now to upload photos to my blog without success. I have written to Google several times and have neither had a reply nor have they fixed my problem. This is so frustrating as I have several blog posts that I wish to put up. If they don't fix it soon people will assume my blog is "dead" and move on! Disaster!!!!! I have been contemplating moving my blog to Weebly so that it is with my website, but at the moment I would much prefer for my blog to stay where it is. Has anyone else out there with a Google Blogger Blog been experiencing this problem? I have tried everything suggested in "help" to no avail and it is definitely not a problem at my end.<br />
<br />
On a more positive note, my new heater has arrived at the store and will be installed Thursday next week. That will be nearly 10 weeks exiled from my studio and my work! I'm dying to get back to work. My sanity is in peril with every day that I cannot make art.<br />
<br />
Can you please let me know whether or not you are having problems uploading photos to blogger? It will help me track down a cause for my problems and hopefully get me back to blogging.Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-67618123710300625102012-07-26T05:37:00.003-07:002012-07-26T05:37:21.770-07:00Apologies and Good News<br />
First a sincere apology for neglecting my blog. I have been away in Melbourne for a couple of weeks visiting friends and celebrating my mother's 80th birthday. It was good to get a complete change of scenery, although I sorely missed these frosty winter mountains and my furry, 4-legged family. I did some fabulous shopping for all manner of things, including some fabulous textile related stuff and some decorator pieces for my home (no we didn't fly, we took the ferry and the car so the size and weight of bought items was not an issue!). I'll blog soon about some of the places I visited and my fab purchases.<br />
<br />
The good news? The insurance company (finally!) approved the purchase of my new wood heater for my studio. There was a lot of toing and froing because they thought the unit I picked was a bit too fancy looking (and expensive) compared to the one that was stolen. In the end, they had to agree that the expensive new model was the only thing on the market that would be comparable in function and construction to my sadly departed hand made cast iron heater. It was also one of the few units that was attractive to look at. You have no idea how many ugly heaters there are out there. I will not have "ugly" in my studio (or anywhere else, for that matter)! Hopefully, in about 1 week's time, I should be back in the studio enjoying the warmth and getting on with my new works.<br />
<br />
I was going to show you some photos of the cakes I made for my mother's birthday celebration, but blogger will not download any photos for me at the moment (grrrrr!). Despite having emailed google about my problem about 3 days ago, I have had no reply and my problem has not been fixed). So, sorry there are no photos and I won't be able to do any more posts until this mess is sorted out.Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-72246812353114134652012-07-11T01:25:00.000-07:002012-07-11T01:25:17.552-07:00Pinterest: The Arguments For PinningThis is a continuation of my previous post Pinterest and Copyright: Should you be afraid?<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
In my last post I wrote about some concerns that
have been expressed by various individuals on the web regarding Pinterest’s
user terms and the potential for copyright infringement. Is the concern warranted or is it, as some
web authors suggest, mere hysteria?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As I wrote in my previous article, the terms of
use for Pinterest are in essence the same as those for other social media sites
such as Facebook, Google + and Tumblr.
Potentially anyone using any of these platforms could be subject to a
variety of contract breaches just for using the sites as they were
intended. Why aren’t people constantly
being sued by such online companies for breach of contract? Perhaps because suing their own users would
make other users close their accounts in droves. thereby destroying their
entire business model.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At the level of the individual user, trying to
determine what constitutes “fair use” with regard to copyright is difficult and
complex. But let’s look at the Internet
as a whole. There are those who would
argue that reposting anyone’s content from anywhere without the express
permission of the author or artist, even in the form of copying a direct link
or posting with full credit, is a breach of copyright. The
Internet is based on sharing information.
If these standards were applied to all web posts the Internet would be
far from a “net”, it would simply consist of millions of isolated websites all
relying on individual users stumbling across their content. If the law were read to the last letter even
search engines, the most fundamental tool for web searching, would not be able
to function and merely forwarding an email could put you in legal hot water. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As artists, sharing what we do is vital to our
ability to thrive. Community has always
been essential for sharing ideas and techniques, for showcasing our work and
for generating discussion and constructive criticism. We are fortunate to live in an era when our
community is not limited to those immediately in our geographical area, but
encompasses people the world over. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background-color: white;">I recently participated in a Pinterest webinar
hosted by Ariane Goodwin, creator of the </span><span style="background-color: white;"><a href="http://smartist.com/live-telesummit/2012-home-study-edition-2/" target="_blank"> smARTist telesummit</a> and presented by

of what they offer in their more in depth online Pinterest training course
<a href="http://www.pinterruption.com/" target="_blank">"Pinterruption"</a>. The webinar opened with some astounding statistics
regarding Pinterest.</span><span style="background-color: white;"> </span><span style="background-color: white;">For instance:</span></div>
<ul type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal">Pinterest attracts 11 million
unique visitors monthly making it the most visited social media site and
the first website ever to receive over 10 million visitors per month<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Pinterest is the 3rd most popular
social media site in the US<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">1/5 of Facebook users connect with
Pinterest daily<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">Shoppers referred by Pinterest are
10% more likely to buy</li>
</ul>
<div>
The advantages for artists are obvious. With so many visitors the potential for your artwork to reach a broad audience is astounding. Furthermore that exposure is more likely to turn into sales via Pinterest than any other social networking site. Sure, many people will just glance at your work for a few seconds and move on, but if even a small percentage go on to look at your website and blog you are going to massively increase your potential for sales. I, for one, would like a slice of the global art market pie.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Photographer Trey Ratcliffe has <a href="http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2012/02/13/why-photographers-should-stop-complaining-about-copyright-and-embrace-pinterest/" target="_blank">written an article</a> on why he thinks photographers should be embracing Pinterest. He says that as artists we have a choice to let "what-can-be motivate you rather than the more poisonous fear-of-loss". He offers some astounding statistics: some of his images on Google + get as many as 5 million views and a whopping 15% of traffic to his own website comes via Pinterest. Some photographers argue that Ratcliffe is able to do this because he is already an established photographer with thriving sales. The fact that he is an incredible photographer and travels to the world's most spectacular locations to capture his images is the key to his success, however his generous attitude towards sharing has surely been extremely advantageous. I, myself, noticed a significant bump in visits to my blog after 2 of my Crop Circle embroideries were posted on Pinterest. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What about copyright? Here's my take on it: I am perfectly happy for anyone to post images of my work on any social media website. I would prefer that they link back to my own website or blog, or at least to another blog or website that has linked the images back to me. However, even if links to my own websites get lost in the "repinning" process I am still ok with it. Anyone who wants to trace the original source of an image can easily do so by using <a href="http://images.google.com.au/" target="_blank">Google Image</a> or <a href="http://www.tineye.com/" target="_blank">Tin Eye</a>. (I must say that I find Google Image to be better at finding images than Tin Eye). For those who choose to simply view my images and move on without knowing who the artist is, that's ok. Some time later they may come across more of my work that is linked or credited and think "I've seen her work before" and that very recognition may spur them to look further into what I do. Of course there are more serious copyright threats and if I discovered that someone was using my work as "wallpaper" for a website or claiming it as their own (or even implying so) I would be unhappy about it. In such a case I would contact the infringer and demand that they remove my content from their website. I would not automatically jump to instigating legal action against them. Such action would only be taken if they persisted in unlawfully using my material. If, however, someone was using my images for financial gain, for example by using my images on greeting cards or by selling prints <span style="background-color: white;">or worse selling them as embroidery kits (shudder!) </span><span style="background-color: white;">I would definitely get litigious. While all are technically copyright infringements I think there is something of a sliding scale of heinousness. I am all for people innocently sharing images of my work. It actually pleases me that they like my work enough to want to share it with others. I am also happy that Pinterest allows them to view my images in full resolution as I know they are seeing the work in a quality image that shows it to its full advantage. This is also the reason that I do not watermark my images. I find watermarks annoying and distracting and I always feel a little cheated when I can't view an image that I like without this blight.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;">Of course, if you don't want your images pinned Pinterest has provided a <a href="https://support.pinterest.com/entries/21101932-what-if-i-don-t-want-images-from-my-site-to-be-pinned" target="_blank">"no pin" meta tag</a>. If you do not know html code this is not a problem. There are many sites that show you how to add the tag to your website. <a href="http://makingamark.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/pinterest-how-to-prevent-your-blogger.html" target="_blank">This article</a>, for example, gives easy step-by-step instructions on how to include the tag on your Blogger site. You can also prevent people sharing your images by putting a statement near the top of your blog page stating that you do not wish your images to be reproduced or linked or whatever (<a href="http://albedoarlee.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Arlee Barr's</a> blog has a great example of how to do this). I would venture that almost all people are respectful enough to comply.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;">If, like me, you are happy to have your work pinned, let your readership know about it so that they can "pin without fear". On the <a href="http://www.behance.net/" target="_blank">Behance Network</a> more artists than not display the "pin it" button and I love that I can pin their work with a light heart. It is easy to add a "pin it" or "follow me on Pinterest" tag to your website. There are lots of online resources that will give you instructions for adding these to whatever platform(s) you are using. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
The unofficial Pinterest code of conduct states that Pinterest is not to be used for self promotion. So, what is the point of having your own Pinterest page? For me it is a place where people who like my art can go and see what inspires me. Every day I trawl the internet looking at gorgeous artworks, design and photography. I love that I can share them and that I can go back to my Pinterest boards to look at those images again and again. While I see lots of lovely things on the web, I only pin those images that (to me) have the "wow" factor. I also like to think that I am helping to promote the work of artists that I admire. In the spirit of Pinterest I do not pin images of my own work, however, I have included the URLs of my website, blog and Facebook page in my personal description so that people who like what I pin can see what I do.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whether you choose to start your own Pinterest boards or allow or disallow your work to be posted there, I would urge everyone to thoroughly research the issue. Read as many authoritative articles on the pros and cons and make your decision based on your own research. I worry that too many artists have read alarmist or misleading articles or heard second hand of the dangers and have jumped off the band wagon without really doing their own investigations and, as such, may be missing a wonderful opportunity.</div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia;"> I believe the benefits of Pinterest are immense both
in terms of personal inspiration and in the promotion of my own artwork. I firmly believe there will be a time when serious art collectors will use Pinterest as a visual supermarket, scouring Art Boards to search out new talent. Could there be an easier way to sell your work?</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia;">What do you think? Will you be pinning and allowing your work to be pinned? I'm looking forward to a lively debate!</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">There has been a lot of talk around the internet regarding Pinterest and artist copyright. Many artists are choosing to
block their images from being pinned, seeing it as a direct assault on their
copyright, or worse as being a gateway to their images being used for the
commercial or personal benefit of others. Why has Pinterest raised these
concerns where other forms of social media seem to fly under the radar?</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The concern started when <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/why-i-tearfully-deleted-my-pinterest-inspiration-boards/" target="_blank"><span id="goog_956051064"></span>Kirsten Kowalski posted this article</a><span id="goog_956051065"></span></span></u> back
in February in which, as a lawyer, she explores the legality of using
Pinterest. (Incidentally, Kowalski does not state what branch of law she
practices and does not state that she is a specialist in contract or copyright
law). She uncovered much of concern in
the Pinterest Terms and Conditions (you know, the fine print that just about no
one reads). The essence of her findings were:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<ul type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Pinterest passes on the liability
of copyright infringement onto the pinner. Basically by agreeing to
the Terms of Use you are entering a contract into which you avow that you
have all rights to the images that you have posted or, at least, the
permission of the creator and/or owner of the image. This means that
if someone decides to sue for copyright infringement you will have to pay
for your own defence and will have to cough up any compensation awarded by
the court. The kicker is that you have also agreed to pay for
Pinterest's defence if a lawsuit is also brought against the service
provider.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Terms
such as these would make anyone baulk if they were actually likely to be acted
upon. It is important to note that <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20120312/04454818073/those-freaking-out-over-pinterests-terms-service-have-you-stopped-using-every-other-internet-site-yet.shtml" target="_blank">other user generated sites have similar (virtually identical)user terms</a></span></u> and conditions, including You Tube, Facebook
and Tumblr, Twitpic and Google +. These types of contracts are standard
fare for lawyers whose job it is to “protect” their clients.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Kirsten
Kowalski has raised the issue of direct copyright infringement when using
Pinterest stating:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<ul type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Pinning images may not fall into
the category of fair use because they are not low -resolution thumbnails,
but rather the same full resolution image as the original.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Many have pointed out that this presents a
conundrum as Pinterest <span style="background-color: white;"> discourages
the use of its site for personal promotion (via your own images) and therefore
it is hard to fathom how you could use the site without using other people's
images.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>

includes a more thorough examination of the subject of fair use. She provides links for articles that explore
this topic in more depth. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

When I started the blog I was on the road in the US and did the original set up and formatting in a hurry. As you know, I have just recently changed the look of the blog (although I'm not happy with the grey background and will probably change it again shortly) so that it shows my work off a bit better and looks a little more like my website.<br />

<br />
When I started this blog I had a couple of goals. One was to share my work and the things that inspire me with a wider audience. To date I have had nearly 7000 visitors. This is not a lot in terms of internet traffic, but in terms of an art blog with such a specific focus I'm happy with it and am grateful for every reader who tunes in, particularly those of you who return on a regular basis. From the beginning I knew that it would take perseverance, time and, most importantly, consistency <span style="background-color: white;">to build a following</span><span style="background-color: white;">. My aim from the beginning was to write an average of 2 blog posts per week. I am happy to say that I have achieved that goal and plan to continue doing so into the future.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDJiw1yBUSuS7x6tTPSOek1qVpMv_Qgwqix60GX04dX_oJP9KkR_lPmTyuPCVD8yMHLrgMtroF2d2eJy85_tycET_ELXWZmv_6fv3-kgDE6D-rBeE0vSDGSBxJ4P5TmA8ExwdqBCAmahM/s1600/brysha_bird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDJiw1yBUSuS7x6tTPSOek1qVpMv_Qgwqix60GX04dX_oJP9KkR_lPmTyuPCVD8yMHLrgMtroF2d2eJy85_tycET_ELXWZmv_6fv3-kgDE6D-rBeE0vSDGSBxJ4P5TmA8ExwdqBCAmahM/s400/brysha_bird.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Another of my goals was to try to build a sense of community amongst embroiderers and artists. In this sense I think I have been far from successful. While there are a few regulars who leave comments, by and large the majority of visitors to my blog don't stay to leave a comment and participate in a conversation. I am by no means putting the onus on my readers. I think my posts often present as "complete" leaving little for my readers to contribute. I hope to develop a style that does more to invite participation in an ongoing dialogue.<br />

So, thanks for being with me in my first year. I hope you'll be with me in the years to come!Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-7366145737541681222012-06-23T01:57:00.000-07:002012-06-23T01:57:01.159-07:00New Work, New Direction<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been promising for some time to post some images of my new work. Progress has been slower than I would like due to having to wait weeks for my gold threads to arrive from Canada and the theft of my wood heater. I didn't go to my studio for about 2 weeks after that, partly because it brought me down a bit, but also because winter has well and truly set in up here in the Tasmanian Central Highlands and it is absolutely freezing in my studio. Despite that, I have braved the cold these last few days and with the help of an electric radiator, a hot water bottle and a knee blanket it is just bearable enough to be able to sit and work for 4 or 5 hours at a time. I'm pretty sure this is not what is meant by suffering for your art! Needless to say my usual lunch of fruit and yoghurt has been replaced with more warming fare such as soup and toasted sandwiches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you will see from the photos below I am trying something completely different. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKKUVqq-5tf7CwViDWAblIQ0jgGipa4s3qW2f8GulOJrLs62gE8jqFCOvZBBBL2QckaGgArTfjYP_kPmrivNJrRqMpruldjnbF8z7DV9sCQf-cnjOcuK9E4qWOGHgn7eCLj2E0Vjf8wE0/s1600/who+watches+the+child+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKKUVqq-5tf7CwViDWAblIQ0jgGipa4s3qW2f8GulOJrLs62gE8jqFCOvZBBBL2QckaGgArTfjYP_kPmrivNJrRqMpruldjnbF8z7DV9sCQf-cnjOcuK9E4qWOGHgn7eCLj2E0Vjf8wE0/s400/who+watches+the+child+4.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots of goldwork with bold flat colour to set it off. Now if you're thinking that my goldwork doesn't look that flash please remember that you are looking at the work in detail and that the gaps you see are not overly apparent when viewing the work in person. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The areas inside the orange and pink are worked using flatworm. I love flatworm, but it is really difficult to work in such tiny areas. So, while it may look a little rough here, it looks fine to scale and it has a fabulous 3 dimensional quality that makes this area look really lively. I'm really quite happy with the result.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This area is worked with japanese gold thread on the diagonal with separate sections outlined with a line of medium pearl purl and fine grecian twist on the outside. I'll probably get finicky and fill in the tiny areas where the satin stitching reveals some of the ground fabric.</div>

So, there you have it. Gold work, representational elements - what exactly is the story here. Well there is a story and it's a complex one that will be revealed over the coming weeks as the work develops further.</div>

I've been working on a piece with a completely new direction. Honestly, I've been scared stiff. I'm not sure if what I'm doing is going to work and I won't know until it's well along. I have some early photos, but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to share them yet.<br />
<br />
I hadn't been to the studio for a couple of days as I needed some time out to just relax. Then, yesterday, my husband went up there to get something he needed and discovered that someone had broken into my studio and stolen my wood heater! This is no small task. That heater weighed in excess of 200 kg. It would have taken at least 4 strong young men to lift it out. They came equipped with bolt cutters and crow bars to get through the gate and into the house, destroying 2 doors in the process. The worst part is that the heater was an amazing custom made piece made from a really heavy old cast iron boiler. It was the best wood heater ever. It took nothing to light it and was capable of heating my often freezing cold studio in under half an hour. I couldn't buy something like it if I wanted to. Well, actually, today I did a bit of an internet search and discovered that there is a heater on the market that is comparable (although it is unlikely to light as easily), but even after I get the insurance money I will be about $2000 out of pocket. Yikes! Then there is all the expense of further ramping up the security on the property. I can't tell you how violated I feel by this nasty calculated crime.<br />
<br />
You may have notice that I have changed the look of my blog to bring it closer to the look of my web site. The original design was done very hastily while I was on holidays in the US last year and it was overdue for a revamp. I'm not sure it is 100 per cent the way I want it, but it is a start.<br />
<br />
Here's hoping that all your creative endeavours are coming along nicely.Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-77003299255202204422012-05-18T23:29:00.000-07:002012-05-18T23:29:33.119-07:00It's Finished.Yes, today I put the final stitches into my big work today and have stretched it ready for framing. It's final dimensions are 72 cm wide x 52 cm high. That might not sound all that big, but when you are covering the surface with tiny stitches, believe me, it's daunting.<br />

I'm thinking of calling this piece "New World Order", a commentary on the ascendancy of China as a super economic power and how the people (mostly Uighur Muslims)who live in this and other similarly remote locations are not only not benefitting from the Chinese pseudo-capitalist miracle, but are actually experiencing a decline in living standards and basic human rights.</div>

(If you're in Australia, go to <a href="http://booko.com.au/products/9781408130711" target="_blank">Booko</a> to see where you can get this book cheapest). This book is gorgeous from beginning to end. I have chosen a few favourite pages to share with you. (Actually, I lie. Every page in the book is my favourite, but I couldn't show them all. That would just be crazy!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The book features catwalk couture collections categorised by the country of origin of the traditional dress that inspired the collections.</div>

That means it's time to move onto a new series of works. I can't say too much just yet, but my next series is going to be autobiographical (although not in an obviously literal sense). It will contain representational elements and include a lot of gold work In anticipation I bought some gold threads so that when I'm ready to start I can just get into it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB8ZMKUzLaWjIOE6LyAAWsuHWjfv7HrIhGV3NYpAqlZEf0aDV1az1r4zoTGXvdUssiRKRat4lh71yJAl0hAu0wy-jT5KDVFYb0N2b2UHLx8NC-bnB6iM87mI0vhoxmYFWXBaCg2KqfLaY/s400/IMG_4266.JPG" width="400" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you've ever wondered what $200 worth of gold threads look like, this is it. It's not as much as I thought and given the large size of the works I have in mind, these are going to be very pricey works to stitch. (I told my husband who said "don't work too fast!" Ha, ha.)</div>
<br />

I've been enjoying just looking at my threads and imagining the possibilites. I love the slippery gorgeousness of the large bullions pictured here.</div>

Pictured here are 2 thicknesses of Grecian Twist (don't forget you can click on the photos to get a close up look). I love the contrast of the gold and silver threads. This thread is quite stiff and is a paler gold as it is only available in Gilt and not in 2% gold.</div>

As I wrote previously, it was a lovely night with lots of people in attendance. My mother, sister and niece flew to Hobart for the opening and we spent a fun weekend just hangin' out.<br />

There were so many people there and the love in the room was overwhelming. I haven't done a blog post about it yet because, frankly, I am still recovering from the post opening exhaustion, but I promise it is coming soon!<br />
<br />
So, my cautionary tale.......<br />
<br />
About 20 years ago I had a friend who lived in a 70's unit in a boring suburb. It wasn't her first choice of where to live, but she had some money and needed to buy a place to live. At the time property prices were on a ridiculous high and this was all she could afford. The unit was cosy enough, but the bathroom was dull, to say the least. It was very beige and brown, but not in a good Japanese minimalist kind of way, more like a seventies lack of imagination and good taste way. On the walls was a wallpaper that had a repeating fern pattern (each fern leaf was about 5 cm long) in light tan and light olive green. The wallpaper gave the room an overall look of, well....tan-ness. The pattern was a simple outline pattern, there was no colour filling the fern leaves. While washing my hands in the bathroom I had a great idea! I went out to my friend and said: "you know what you should do? You should colour in your bathroom wallpaper!". She answered that I had made that suggestion when I had been there some months before (I had clearly forgotten). Convinced that having the same great idea twice confirmed the brilliance of the idea, I said: "it would be great! We could have a party where everyone goes into the bathroom and colours the walls!". <br />
<br />
Sadly, my friend declined. My brilliant idea died and the bathroom remained despairingly tan. I have few regrets in my life, but not colouring in that wallpaper, and hence improving the look of the bathroom immensely (and no doubt increasing the resale value of the unit) is one of them.<br />
<br />
So, my advice to you. If you think your friend's wallpaper needs colouring, DO NOT ASK PERMISSION FIRST. Sneak in one day with some pencils or a pack of texta colours and get to it! My theory is that once you start colouring your friend will realise the brilliance of your actions and get into it with you. That, or your friend will have a cow and disown you forever more. It's worth the risk though (in the name of colour), don't you think?Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-59416598903763450422012-04-25T01:23:00.001-07:002012-04-25T01:25:10.312-07:00The Wonderful Typography of Evelin KasikovI need a bit of a diversion from the approach of my show and so I'm delighted to share with you the work of <a href="http://evelinkasikov.com/" target="_blank">Evelin Kasikov</a>. Evelin is a typographic designer whose works are hand stitched onto paper. She has developed a fascinating technique in which she uses <span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;"> "typography, grid systems and design techniques to challenge the preconceptions of embroidery."</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;"> </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This work is part of her <a href="http://evelinkasikov.com/Moving-Images" target="_blank">Moving Images</a> embroidery series. Evelin explains the technique on her website: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">"I use conventional screen angles: Cyan 105˚, Magenta 75˚, Yellow 90˚ and Black 45˚ and prepare dot screens for cross-stitch. Works are stitched using cotton threads in CMYK colours, the intensity of colour depends on the number of strands used. The final outcome is a printed page created by hand."</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;"> </span></div>

I love this image showing Floating Dots from close up to distant. When I view any work in a gallery I always look at it from a series of distances. This image gives us that advantage without actually seeing the image in person. Evelin explains her intention this way:</div>

Here in glorious close up is a view of her layered cross stitch technique. I think it is fascinating and fabulous. I'm thinking of incorporating this idea into some of my works as another way of providing complex texture and depth.</div>

First, here's a picture of the invitation (and yes, you are all cordially invited!). Sorry about the quality of the picture, but I didn't get a digital copy (it was designed by the gallery), so the best I could do was a photo of the actual card.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-z5P2FKfzQ53A80k4KPlDjMrFoBIOAfXeDU6OSawW620bXcbVhrp3eNB9oqwH8jgbCjuHPh7VzdOs688mW0MrgU1ogVKkrbHtDhfTIkI96uOd74_HeNSIRLZLV0MKdyUzayZEQwujg8/s1600/IMG_4178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-z5P2FKfzQ53A80k4KPlDjMrFoBIOAfXeDU6OSawW620bXcbVhrp3eNB9oqwH8jgbCjuHPh7VzdOs688mW0MrgU1ogVKkrbHtDhfTIkI96uOd74_HeNSIRLZLV0MKdyUzayZEQwujg8/s400/IMG_4178.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today's job was to make the display boxes for the greeting cards that I'll be selling at the gallery. The picture below shows the boxes during construction. I had no idea how I was going to make them, but somehow when I got to the studio and looked at what materials I had available the construction method just fell into place.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcA5fmtdti3rK-fiuND0OEUfdRgDXEQ8jF5YSm4VNZ2_fZR7IKxT2pBJfAZ7gfWwv-RGsQ6TvDQxltrgNe2Knz-oCE5NkvDyXWIe0HjjC2BNP4yz6dtkvzJC2pXRexmluePqiQCYfQnlg/s1600/IMG_4179.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcA5fmtdti3rK-fiuND0OEUfdRgDXEQ8jF5YSm4VNZ2_fZR7IKxT2pBJfAZ7gfWwv-RGsQ6TvDQxltrgNe2Knz-oCE5NkvDyXWIe0HjjC2BNP4yz6dtkvzJC2pXRexmluePqiQCYfQnlg/s400/IMG_4179.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After this stage all the seams were covered with masking tape and the boxes were then painted. I had some red/brown paint left over from my studio renovations and after a few coats they should (hopefully) have the look of Japanese lacquer ware (with a few lumpy bumpy bits where the taped seams overlap). Anyway, they should do the job. Making the 5 boxes took about 3 hours which left me with a few hours to do some stitching. It's only been a week since I last did some embroidery, but if I don't get into the studio often enough I start to lose my centre of gravity (I'm sure all you stitch addicts out there know what I mean!). As I tick off the tasks I have to do each day I get a little less stressed about the opening. I'm hoping that on the night I'll just be able to let go and enjoy myself.</div>

Sadly, after baking, they were not as red as when they went in. It seems no matter how much colouring you put in they tend to revert back to a chocolate brown (on the outside at least). </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second batch I made were banana (with passionfruit frosting). All are now safely nesting in the freezer. I'm going to make another 200 today - lime with coconut frosting and flourless chocolate with a rich chocolate ganache. Then all I have to do is make the frostings a day before the opening. I have a hair appointment and have left myself a couple of hours to frost them all before the show.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As the day approaches I am finding myself feeling less and less stressed. Hopefully on the night I'll just be able to let go and enjoy myself.</div>

Posting invitations, putting invites in stores and cafes, making sure all the right people have been notified. Yesterday I had a photo shoot with the Mercury (the Tasmanian daily newspaper). There will be a story in the Sunday Magazine of the newspaper (I'll post a link when it comes out).<br />
<br />
Between now and next Friday I have to send more invites, bake 200 mini cupcakes for the opening, make myself a new necklace to wear, make a presentation stand for the greeting cards I'll be selling at the show. I also need to write an article for a textile magazine and put in an entry for the City of Hobart Art Prize.<br />
<br />
I was planning on having a bit of a day off today, but there are so many things on my mind that I don't think that's going to happen! I can't wait until the opening when everything is done and all I have to do is enjoy showing my work. It's going to be a long week!Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-28476682055248013672012-04-13T23:54:00.002-07:002012-04-13T23:54:40.691-07:00More Work in ProgressToday I finished the middle section depicting the river delta in the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=42.78,89.34&spn=1.0,1.0&q=42.78,89.34%20(Turpan%20Depression)&t=h" rel="geolocation" target="_blank" title="Turpan Depression">Turpan Depression</a>. This was a really difficult section to complete because it interlinks with the section below. Whichever section I worked first was going to present difficulties as there are important landmarks in each section that help to proportion the work (I hope that makes sense!).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The line of black stitching near the top will be removed. It was stitched to hold the whisper silk in place. Even so, this fine, open weave silk fabric just wanted to fray at the slightest touch!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I probably won't have much time for stitching over the next two weeks leading up to my first solo show as my time will be taken up with distributing invitations and other organisational matters. I'll post more about that as happenings arise.</div>

I have spent the last couple of days sorting out this problem. First I had to skein off some new silk thread of a 100 g hank. Normally this is not a big deal, but whereas I normally buy my silk directly from India, this silk I bought from a store in Hobart (interestingly enough they buy their thread from the same supplier in India, however it seems my supplier no longer sells this particular thread so I bought it retail). Because the silk had been on the shelf for some time and, no doubt, handled by many a would be buyer, the threads in the skein were somewhat tangled. After many hours of patient (slow) winding and detangling (about 1/3 of the skein) I was able to wind the thread without too much trouble. In all it took me about 5 hours to wind the 100 g of thread into smaller, dyeable skeins.<br />
<br />
I then dyed the threads I needed which again took longer than I though it would as I had to make up new dye solutions for about 12 colours and then agonised over creating just the right shades I needed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf0gjZ5wD0FmG82eUkNy4XO9Q95lvAxElNOKTsaROoUEHbzHxAoh7ldRxW_WSW_h5_kkaPpmy8GvnlPCfnXO1RzKPDITq5zhyphenhyphenVxKSKsy5CxAl31yvnANwEsA5WfOUHVD0LNwI1Txn_SM/s1600/IMG_4150.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf0gjZ5wD0FmG82eUkNy4XO9Q95lvAxElNOKTsaROoUEHbzHxAoh7ldRxW_WSW_h5_kkaPpmy8GvnlPCfnXO1RzKPDITq5zhyphenhyphenVxKSKsy5CxAl31yvnANwEsA5WfOUHVD0LNwI1Txn_SM/s400/IMG_4150.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you can see the beautiful subtle shades I dyed drying by my wood heater.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv4UlpI0lQxd8AiecYMOohW59k_2FPU5ysxREhiIcpZEToqdKEPwotn9aLpynJZGkO6SHPaH2RY-zGEL4RMPWTI8oUWPr2WnE9nSWWDxBV39IdcYHp7sK7FDAxdSpFnptyjHMAOybcaWU/s1600/IMG_4151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv4UlpI0lQxd8AiecYMOohW59k_2FPU5ysxREhiIcpZEToqdKEPwotn9aLpynJZGkO6SHPaH2RY-zGEL4RMPWTI8oUWPr2WnE9nSWWDxBV39IdcYHp7sK7FDAxdSpFnptyjHMAOybcaWU/s400/IMG_4151.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sadly the photos don't show the gorgeous lustre of the thread, nor the true beauty of the colours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, after embroidering for one and a half hours, the threads were dry and ready to wind onto cards. I always wind very large skeins so that I am sure to have enough of any one colour to finish my projects.</div>

It has been so many months of preparation it seems kind of unreal that the date is nearly here. If you are in Tasmania the opening is on April 27 at 6 pm at the <a href="http://goulburnst.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Goulburn Street Gallery</a>. The gallery website has me down for April 20, but that is a misprint. <br />
<br />
I have 28 works in the show, 19 in the Flow Series and 9 in the Crop Circle Series. For a sneak peak you can go and have a look at my <a href="http://www.martabrysha.com/" target="_blank">website</a>.<br />
<br />
It's Good Friday, a traditional day of rest in our house. The cleaning is done and the hot cross buns are rising before going into the oven. Happy Easter to all my readers.Marta Bryshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14271698761413852245noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888984211645766201.post-56660353218879856162012-03-31T01:58:00.000-07:002012-03-31T01:58:46.293-07:00Work in Progress ContinuedI have been working furiously in my studio over the last week and have achieved quite a lot.<br />
<br />
When I wrote my last post I had just finished the red ridges and white geometric areas (representing the peaks above the snow line and the snow capped mountains below of the Turpan Depression). This week I softened the white area by interspersing the white shapes with directional seed stitches. Then I went about defining the next section, first with raised ridges of palestrina stitch, followed by thinner, less raised lines of stem stitch and finally finer lines of stem stitch to provide directionality.<br />
<br />

Here's how the entire piece looked after all the solid lines were stitched in.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you can clearly see the three levels of linear stitching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnyS14iN2TLyk61-uv08L9z5UmZF6cPypuoe0hCZ-keYijQb7VJaY0CHqC4zQwDQetOkKnur76ewtpIs5pSajxv3moOQ796nxMtac_wwfxyLAEMLp5UKE87DZ2BnkjAnaz6n8QSCCvbQ/s1600/IMG_4121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnyS14iN2TLyk61-uv08L9z5UmZF6cPypuoe0hCZ-keYijQb7VJaY0CHqC4zQwDQetOkKnur76ewtpIs5pSajxv3moOQ796nxMtac_wwfxyLAEMLp5UKE87DZ2BnkjAnaz6n8QSCCvbQ/s400/IMG_4121.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And in mega mega close up showing the row of tiny knots formed by palestrina stitch. To give you some idea of how fine the stitching is, the ground fabric is 24mm silk habotai with a very fine dense weave. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love the way the close up photos show the myriad fine, shiny silk strands that together form a single thread.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today I proceeded to fill in the linear areas with directional seed stitches.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Notice how the colour of the dyed fabric is brighter than the thread used for the seed stitches on top, thus enlivening the image and giving greater textural and directional definition to the seed stitches.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By my calculation it will probably take me another day and a half perhaps (about 10 hours) to finish the seed stitching. Then it's onto the water way in the middle that will be the focus of the entire work. I will need to do some thinking and contemplation to find a way to meaningfully represent this area of the work. I love the puzzle solving stage and the meditational act of stitching afterwards. Stay tuned for more updates.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This week I started on a new work and it is large and ambitious! The dimensions are 70 cm x 48 cm. That might not sound all that large, but when nearly the entire surface needs to be covered in stitches it starts to seem very daunting. My source image is a satellite photograph of the T<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turpan_Depression" target="_blank">urpan Depression</a>, a mountainous region spanning from Tadjikistan to China. The image inspired me because of the fabulous textures and contrasts.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dyeing the ground fabric was a challenge. I usually have no trouble matching my dye colours to my original conception, but somehow, every colour I mixed came out brighter than what I wanted. In the end I decided to go with what I had. I figured if these are the colours that my brain wants to use, then I should just go with it. When it came to dyeing my threads I was able to achieve colours closer to my original conception. I think the contrast of the muted colours of the threads against the brighter colours of the ground fabric will make the work more vibrant.</div>

The central area is crucial to the cohesion of the whole piece so I began by laying down the whisper silk. I then embroidered a couple of small areas just to mark out the proportions I would be working with later.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then started stitching the area representing the highest mountain peaks that lie above the snow line. I knew that if I could make this work then I was going to be able to pull the work off as a whole. I started by stitching in the mountain ridges using long armed palestrina stitch. I then defined the valleys with lines of stem stitch. The intervening areas were worked in fern stitch and oriented so as to give the impression of a descent into a valley.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yesterday I added the snow capped mountain regions. I wanted it to be well contrasted with the areas surrounding it, so I worked it in short sections of closed feather stitch. The bold geometry of the white stitching works well against the more organic red area.</div>

Anyway, the picture below gives you an idea of just how spectacular the views were.<br />

Before I got that lovely piece of habotai out of the pot everything I had dyed looked revolting. These homespun cotton samples were underdyed in the weld, cordata and the wattle bark. Cotton does not take natural dyes very well. As a result what I pulled out of the vats looked like dirty polishing cloths. YUK!</div>

and after removing the resist bands and drying. I was a bit disappointed because I was hoping for solid red circles, although now I realise that to get that effect I would have had to sew them, which would have taken a couple of days work, time I didn't have.</div>

This is the scarf that I showed in a previous post which I spent 6 hours stitching. Unfortunately the scarf was in the indigo too long and I lost most of the colour of the underdye. However, the alternating pattern of folds is as I was hoping. I intend to not iron it so that the folds remain. It'll make a great scarf this winter.</div>

Overall a lovely weekend (despite the monster migraine) and I learned heaps, which is, after all the point of it all.</div>

I started preparing some fabrics yesterday. One is a long scarf that took me 6 hours to stitch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnpctk0XrFarSXgSyaoIRPd8aZyMWgSLn1vF_E97L17LeVvkCdCFhP3EQl6LJLftAP-G4ADd30kw9l4uCOOB7EGffkvnL6gAZyTCGiL90TWsBD-AXqdRpjcQCgo_IYf_qNCJs594WNUI/s1600/IMG_4030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnpctk0XrFarSXgSyaoIRPd8aZyMWgSLn1vF_E97L17LeVvkCdCFhP3EQl6LJLftAP-G4ADd30kw9l4uCOOB7EGffkvnL6gAZyTCGiL90TWsBD-AXqdRpjcQCgo_IYf_qNCJs594WNUI/s400/IMG_4030.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I dyed some scarf lengths so that I'd have a few pieces that were a little more interesting than just the basic blue and white. The red and green are crinkle chiffon, the pink/orange piece is a very fine dupioni silk.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Don't you just love these colours?</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This scarf is a heavy weight habotai so it should hold the shibori well after drying. The purple is a little brighter although overall I was a bit disappointed in the dyeing of this piece. Once it has been overdyed with indigo it will either look subtle and sophisticated or (dread) just muddy. We will see. You can see how much stitching was involved.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the scarf with the stitching pulled tight. I've done an alternating pattern of small stitches and larger stitches so there will be some variation in how the dye is taken up and in the final texture of the scarf.</div>
